John Aldis, BF, MMath, MSc

Having finished his Master of Mathematics (MMath) there in 2003 and his MSc in Mathematics (by Research) in 2005 (and graduated in 2006), John Aldis is now a second-year PhD student at the University of Warwick. But don't hold that against him. He also gets jobs as a computer programmer, most recently with Topologika Software. Don't hold that against him, either. Thanks.

University Societies

John is an active member of the Warwick University Live Action Role Play and Science Fiction and Fantasy societies. Over the last couple of years, he has also become a member of CompSoc, the Computing Society.

In previous years, he has performed in shows with Music Theatre Warwick, but although he'd personally like to see MTW go back to doing more Gilbert and Sullivan, he hasn't got time to start directing now. Having got bored of not having a G&S fix, he joined Warwick Student Opera, and took the part of the Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance last term. He's in the chorus for the upcoming performance of Trial By Jury.

Several years ago he joined the Modern Sci-Fi society, but didn't get around to seeing any showings. Evidently, no-one else did either, as they have, unfortunately folded, and so in a sense merged back with the Science Fiction and Fantasy Society, whence it split in the first place. That is, if anyone's going to show videos like they did, it'll be us.

John has also recently taken to going to Céilís with the Céilí (or possibly Ceilidh) society, having enjoyed that kind of thing at home (under the name Barn Dance) since he was quite young.

Writing Projects

John has written the script for a Gilbert and Sullivan pastiche, Bravery, which has been set to music by Anna Scutt. There are many speculative thoughts about when it might be produced -- if you would like to put on a performance of it, e-mail John to discuss terms.

In fact, he usually has a couple of writing projects "on the go" -- for example, he keeps his Dictionary of New Words on this website. Other writing projects tend to be kept more under his hat (i.e. not on his website) as it is then less embarrassing when they don't get finished.

Other Recreational Activities

John likes reading books by numerous authors -- among them Terry Pratchett: he has passed his Batchelor of Fluencing finals in an external Unseen University exam, and is now entitled to put B.F. after his name.

He has read the Harry Potter books (yes, 1-6) and seen the films (1-4). He has yet to finish reading The Lord of the Rings, although he has read the appendices, seen the films in extended edition -- including a one day marathon, and a just-over-one-day marathon -- and listened to the BBC radio dramatisation on tape.

He likes Buffy and Angel, and has been watching Ghosts of Albion on the BBCi website, having become rather an Amber Benson fan.

John likes sailing and rowing, but doesn't get much chance to do them in the Midlands.
